Feminism is still necessary in the 21st century in order to address the various crimes and discrimination that are still perpetrated against women. Many people dispute the necessity of feminism in the modern world and dismiss it as irrelevant, however, as the world continues to become more and more modern, the crimes being committed are also becoming more and more modernized. Consequently, modern crimes necessitate a modern approach to be addressed- modern feminism.
The challenges that still need to be addressed are not new; they have been around for decades. They are:
1) The issue of unequal access to educational opportunities – The educational attainment of women globally is significantly lower than that of men. In a significant number of countries, women aged 15-24 are not enrolled in primary education.
2) Job-based discrimination – This is another contributing factor to the inequality between men and women. Society believes that men are better equipped to perform tasks, manage society more effectively than women, and receive higher wages. This results in low wages for women or unpaid work.
3) Employment-based inequality – Another aspect of gender inequality is that only a few countries give women the same rights as men. In fact, most of the countries only give women 3/4ths of the rights as men. If we look at how women are treated in the workplace, then that has a ripple effect on gender inequality.
4) Societal discrimination – While it may not be as immediate as the other causes listed above, the overall mental makeup of a society plays a significant role in the prevalence of gender inequalities. Gender-based beliefs are deeply ingrained, and while legislative and structural changes can be implemented, there is often resistance in the wake of significant changes.
5) Violence – An analysis conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) for the United Nations Interagency Working Group on Violence against Women in 2018, based on prevalence data spanning the 2000-2018 period in 161 countries and regions, revealed that approximately 1 in 3 (30%) of women worldwide have experienced some form of violence perpetrated by a partner or non-partner.
In order to address these and other gender-based issues, it is necessary to embrace feminism in the twenty-first century. Despite the prevalence of online harassment and hate speech against feminism, it is undeniable that the women of the world require feminism and a transformation more than anything else. It is time to begin the process of gender equality implementation, rather than simply discussing it in order to avoid cancellation.
